Vegetable yields well below long-term average

Processing industry experiences shortages of red, white and green cabbages

Vegetable processors throughout Germany have to reckon with an inadequate availability of raw materials due to the drought-related crop failures. Regarding red, white and green cabbage in particular, the situation is grave: In some cases, losses of up to 50 percent were recorded.

Red and white cabbages also suffered losses of up to 40-50 percent in some growing regions. For other commodities like carrots, beetroot and celery, there are currently much lower yields of about 10 percent below the long-term average.

Enormous burden
The Federal Association of the processing industry (BOGK) speaks of an 'enormous burden' on the industry and is already speaking about empty retail shelves. Furthermore, the 2018 drought is not just a weather event of "national proportions", as the autumn vegetable harvest across Europe has been hit hard. Therefore, acquisitions from neighboring countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Poland are hardly an option either.
