Although mango prices are under a bit of pressure this week, Henk van der Meij of Hars&Hagebauer is still positive about the remainder of the season. “Brazil doesn’t have an excessively large production, and demand from North America continues to be good. The volumes for Europe, with about 130/140 containers per week, aren’t enormous, and they’re even a bit lower than last year.”
Chalk is used to protect the fruit against the bright afternoon sun.
Prices are currently around 5 euro. The most important causes of these relatively low prices are the fairly large supply from Spain marketed at fairly aggressive prices, and the fact that consumption isn’t yet at winter levels, according to the importer. “But that’s no cause for worry, the final volumes from Spain will arrive in week 43, and that could result in a few good weeks for the market.”
The mango looks like this after the chalk has been removed.
“From Brazil, the majority of Tommy Atkins mangoes is shipped to the US, and Palmer and Keith are mostly sold in Europe. The Kent mangoes, most popular in Europe, will follow after about three weeks, and these will result in most of the repeat purchases. Considering the first prospects from Peru indicate they’ll be sending 30 to 40 per cent fewer mangoes, supply will connect nicely, and the mango market could be headed for a good end of the year,” Henk concludes.
