Chile: How to prepare citrus fruits for a frost and recover them afterwards

After the frosts of this year, the Citrus Committee implemented various actions to reduce potential damage. The Technical Seminar of the Citrus Committee will explain to producers how to prepare their orchards against the frost and what measures to take to recover them after a frost.

Some citrus areas in the country were affected by the frosts that occurred during this season. The frosts affected some orchards in specific areas, causing damage to fruit and trees, which leads to various economic losses, mainly because citrus fruits damaged by frost can't be exported.

"Even though frosts are a recurring phenomenon, they are occurring more unexpectedly and in areas where they don't usually happen due to the changes in climate variability. As a result, it's necessary to implement the usual measures, and other actions that adapt to the new climate scenarios," says Monserrat Valenzuela, the manager of the Committee.

In addition, it is important to consider techniques to recover the orchards after the frost and, according to the specialist and speaker of the Seminar that will be held this October 11th at Casa Piedra, Dr. Johanna Martiz, "it is fundamental to consider various agronomic techniques, such as the use of bio-stimulants at different times of the year, foliar applications of micro and macro-elements, where root management is the basis for the rapid recovery of trees at the beginning of spring."

Therefore, the Citrus Committee has included the following presentations in the Technical Seminar:

• Preparation and management to reduce the effect of frost damage in orchards and early recovery techniques. Speaker: Dr. Johanna Martiz M, from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.

• Frost protection systems in citrus orchards, foundations and main factors to consider. Speaker: Dr. Fernando Santibáñez Q., Director of the Center for Agriculture and Environment, and a professor at the University of Chile.
