Ludger Nollet, Nollet Fruit

“Dry weather might cause storage problems for top fruit"

“The apples and pears are of a good size; maybe a little on the small side, but this should not cause any problems. This year, they also taste fantastic. It is only the firmness of the these fruits that could be an issue this year. Due to the dry weather, top fruit demanded much of their trees. The fruit is also riper than other years. The apples and pears are, therefore, not very well-suited to being stored", says Ludger Nollet of the Belgian company, Nollet Fruit. The trader expects few problems for the coming period. However, issues may arise in March or April next year. This is when the fruit needs to be stored.

There is enough top fruit on the market. "There is definitely enough volume. The prices are just very low at the moment. The farmers are certainly getting a low price for their products. Last year's prices were higher due to the low yields. So, prices seem to be exceptionally low this year", he says. “A kilogram of Jonagold apples costs between EUR0,50 and EUR0,60. The price for Conference pears is at about the same level." The trader expects the prices to pick up again toward winter.

In Belgium, the Jonagold is, by far, still the most popular variety of apple variety. However, club varieties are slowly gaining popularity. “We have the Kanzi club variety in our assortment. This apple is, in my opinion, the best Belgian apple. Its market share is growing. This, despite the relatively short period of time that it has been on the market. When it comes to pears, the Conference remains the most popular variety. I expect this to be the case for years to come ”, continues Ludger. “I expect this year to be easier than last year. Last year, there were meager supplies. Buying is much easier this year."
