The apple harvest has started in Nigde, a city located in central Turkey. The city is well-known for its apple production and the production area for dwarf and semi dwarfed apple trees within the city is around 5,200 hectares. The annual production expectation for this season is around 115,000 tons from these trees.
Nigde is the 3rd biggest apple growing city in Turkey. The harvest time for another apple variety, “ Amasya” is about to start in the area as well and Nigde has the biggest production area for this particular variety. In addition to these, other varieties such as Starking, Golden, Granny Smith and Gala are being grown in the city. The total apple production area in the city is 23,600 hectares and the annual apple production in the city is around 429,000 tons.
The quality of apples from Nigde is top-notch and well-regarded both in domestic and export markets. The apples from the area are exported to Russia, Saudi Arabia, India and Malaysia and average productivity per hectare is around 60 tons.
