GB Italia: great satisfaction for the 2018 Sicilian peach campaign

Marsello Lo Sardo, co-owner of GB Italia company together with his brother Diego and his brother-in-law Tonino Muratore, said, “We are trying to keep up with the times. This year, we increased our offer as we added peaches and nectarines to the Canicatti’s apricots and grape.

“The season started at the end of June with the nectarines and continued with the peaches. We had a great satisfaction on a commercial level.

For years, GB Italia has been appreciated by the markets of half Europe for its reliability and pragmatism.

“We had no phytosanitary problems at all. Unlike some of our colleagues, we did not have any rotting cases. Additionally, we even had no problems with the fruit flies, as we used traps. We implemented very well this type of prevention within our fields".

The territories are that of Campobello di Licata and Canicattì, in central Sicily. The pedoclimatic conditions facilitate the ripening of the fruit with ideal organoleptic properties for fresh consumption. Smell and taste give the products a particular essence which recalls the flavours of the past.

The entrepreneur explains, “The overall peaches and nectarines production will amount to approximately 120 tons, at the end of this year’s campaign. We focused especially on the German and French markets, and on the big Italian organised distribution.

Marsello Lo Sardo concludes, “A novelty is the use of the ozone technology in our cold storage cells. On one hand, it allows sanitising the product from parasites and fungi. On the other hand, it allows reducing the amount of water within the fruits, thus making them more resistant during the post-harvesting. We have been praised by Gdos for the shelf-life of our products – despite the long-distance transport from Sicily to Northern Europe.
