Upper Austria: 20 percent of growers farms are 'organic'

According to a recent report, 20,7% of growers in Upper Austria is already cultivating their fields according to organic guidelines. This corresponds to a growth of almost 5% compared to 2016.

It is a success for man and nature: 4,575 farms in Upper Austria are already cultivating according organic guidelines. And the organics market flourishes; last year there was a nationwide increase of 12 percent. However, Brexit, which could reduce subsidies, worries organic farmers.

Those who still wants to change to "bio" must hurry up. Only until 15 December can farmers join the current rural development program.

On September 28, the "Day of Organic Farming" is to be celebrated. "We want to raise awareness of the achievements of our members," says Franz Waldenberger, chairman of BIO Austria, which represents around 60 percent of organic farms in Upper Austria.

According to krone.at, Waldenberger pointed out that in the previous year, nationwide organic food was sold to the tune of €1.8 billion, an increase of 12%.
