Nutrispud line of potatoes answers consumer demand for healthier options

In 2016, EarthFresh introduced the Nutrispud potato line with Carisma – a Low Glycemic Response potato. “It is the first potato product that contains slow-release carbohydrate by nature,” says Stephanie Cutaia with EarthFresh. “As a low GR food, the Carisma delivers more sustained energy and can assist with weight management. Carisma are great for Diabetics, health conscious shoppers and fitness/nutrition enthusiasts.”

Tested against Russet
EarthFresh created the Nutrispud line as it identified a consumer demand for healthier products. “Although our conventional and organic potatoes are naturally healthy being high in vitamin C, containing a good source of potassium, being full of fiber, fat free and gluten free, our Nutrispud branded potato varieties have a higher level of specific nutrients,” Cutaia mentioned. “They are all identified and tested against the traditional Russet potato in food lab tests.”

Higher levels of antioxidants
The newest member of the Nutrispud family is Vitality, expected to be available in stores as of mid-October. “It’s a colorful blend of purple, red and yellow potatoes and the varieties used in the blend contain higher levels of antioxidants compared to the standard potato.” The antioxidants in these varieties include Anthocyanins and four Carotenoids : antheraxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin and violaxanthin. “One medium (110g) serving of Vitality potatoes provides 566.5 mg of anthocyanins, while one medium serving of standard potatoes provides 137.5 mg of anthocyanins,” Cutaia said.

Potatoes for the Nutrispud line are grown across Canada. Response to Carisma has been really good with high demand from Canadian consumers. “We hope to have a good response to Vitality as well when it launches next month,” concluded Cutaia. “We even receive calls and emails from the US, but are not able to sell the Nutrispud line in the US as the FDA does not recognize low GI products.”
