Turkey: “This season the prices of pomegranates are not as far apart”

The competition is fierce when it comes to pomegranates. Italy is experiencing some low yields, while Egypt is getting all hands on deck to be able to compete with Turkey. Turkey is not too worried though, as they rely on their expertise and the quality of their pomegranates. Even the price-gap isn’t a huge factor now, as Alanar claims the prices are not as different this year.

The harvesting of Turkish pomegranates has been going on for a full week now, and the first fruits have been exported to a new home. Yigit Gokyigit from Turkish exporting company Alanar is very pleased with the produce this season: “The pomegranates are looking good, we have all kinds of sizes and export two varieties; Hicaz and Wonderful. The quality is great, and the fruits will get an even better red-ish color as the season goes on. The color doesn’t really change anything in the taste, but it just gives the pomegranates an even more desirable look.”

Alanar has been a steady player in the market for years and does not fear Egypt’s ambition this year: “Because of the good quality of our pomegranates we’re not too worried about competition from other countries. Egypt had very low prices for the past couple of years, but this season our prices are not as far apart, so they’ve lost that advantage over us. We have a product that we can get behind for the full 100 per cent.”

Most of Alanar’s pomegranates are heading towards Europe and the Far East: “We have steady customers in Germany, England and Singapore. We’re producing about 30% more this season and we’ll be able to sell them all to our usual markets,” Yigit Gokyigit continues. Although he claims Alanar never halts its ambition to grow even bigger as an exporter: “We’re always looking to enter new markets though, which is why we went to Asia Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong and will be presenting our finest pomegranates during Fruit Attraction in Madrid. People are always welcome to get a taste of Turkey’s finest during the event.”

Alanar will be present at Fruit Attraction in Madrid, the event takes place between 23 and 25 October. You can find them in Pavillion 6 with stand number 6D05C.
