"This campaign was characterized by unfavorable weather in spring. Except for the Blonde orange, Lemon and Pink Grapefruit productions - with volumes in line with the previous season - a 20-30% drop is expected for the 2018 industry citrus fruit campaign, at least when it comes to Blood oranges, Tangerines and White grapefruits," reports Salvatore Imbesi, director of Ortogel Spa.
Salvatore Imbesi (in the photo) talks about the volumes available for the produce destined to the processing industry.
Blood oranges: the drought and high temperatures in May and June have led to water stress and droppings. Combined with the modest setting in the old groves, this will lead to lower volumes destined to the processing industry.
Blonde oranges: quantities and quality are expected to be stable compared with the 2017/18 campaign. Despite the lower yields, the production in new groves was good. Most of the fruit will be destined to the fresh produce market, while unsuitable produce will be sent to the processing industry.
Low production expected for old orchards that historically produce a larger percentage of citrus fruit destined to make juices. Therefore, depending on demand on the fresh fruit market, quantities destined to the processing industry will be 20-30% lower than in 2018.
Lemons: forecasts are stable, therefore expectations are unvaried compared with 2018.
Tangerines: just like blood oranges, tangerines were also affected by the lack of water and the weather. The drop in production should be of around 30%.
Grapefruits: the pink grapefruit production is abundant, while that of white grapefruits is limited. What is reported will anyway depend on fresh fruit market conditions.
