Italy: Romagna Mia white nectarines

A series of measures can ensure that producing peaches and nectarines in September can lead to great satisfaction. Especially as the fresh produce available is very limited. So far, however, there were no varieties suitable for late cultivation.

Romagna Mia white nectarines with a characteristic red pit have been produced for the past few years. Harvesting is carried out between 15th and 20th September but fruits can stay on the tree for days.

Daniele Neri (Ravenna) is the licencee nursery gardener who has tested the variety for years. Interested producers and technicians can get in touch with him to see the trees and fruits first-hand.

"This variety holds well on plants. The most important aspect, just like with all other Romagna series types, it that producers must not rush harvesting. Trees must be given the chance to grow AAA grades and reach certain Brix levels, as the market pays well for these fruits. Romagna Mia white nectarines are particularly tasty when harvested at the right moment."

The red pit stains the flesh making Romagna Mia truly unmistakable

Pruning is very important, as sunlight and air must circulate among the leaves. Thinning must also be carried out to make fruits reach their full potential. Neri recommends planting peach trees on mulching films to favor water draining. Fertigation must be monitored and provided with a side hose - no driplines or mini-sprinklers, as they would wet the neck. Trees are rustic and can adapt to different conditions.

"It's useless to complain about low prices if you supply unripe fruit throughout summer. Fruit doesn't ripen in cells, it actually loses water and wilts. High quality is the only way to achieve good prices."

Summer 2018 was positive for peaches and nectarines, although various producers had to deal with hail. Protecting orchards with nets is a necessity.

"Romagna Mia adapts to various areas and I'm open to discuss it with anyone interested in a nice profitable variety. A few cooperatives have also contacted me."
