Hansa Green Tour, Iceland Green Tour, 24-29 November

Growing exotic fruit during cold, dark Icelandic winters thanks to geothermal energy

From 24 to 29 November, Hansa Green Tour organises the Icelandic Green Tour, a networking trip for sustainability professionals who want to learn about geothermal initiatives in Iceland and who want to share their knowledge with each other. Geothermal energy is the most important source of sustainable energy in Iceland, and could also become an important factor in making the energy mix in the Netherlands more sustainable.

During the trip, successful geothermal projects are visited, and there’s the option to talk to experts and users. The CarbFix project will also be visited, this project experiments in getting CO2 from the outdoor air, mineralises it and then saves it as rocks in the soil. A promising technique to get CO2 from the atmosphere in order to combat climate change.

Geothermal energy in greenhouse horticulture – Agricultural University Iceland
A visit to one of the greenhouse horticultural projects is also scheduled, as well as to the Agricultural University Iceland, where geothermal energy is successfully used to grow tropical fruit such as bananas and pineapple in a hostile environment with long, cold and dark winters.
