Preliminary talks on zoning laws start this week

Plans to rebuild Munich wholesale market hall picks up again

As reported by Abendzeitung, Münchner Merkur and the Wochenanzeiger, the planned rebuild of the wholesale market is to pick up again after a short summer break. "There are regular exchanges with politicians and the administration, who continue to be very positive about the project," says Christa Heidingsfelder, chief representative of the Umschlagzentrum Großmarkt München GbR (UGM GbR). The municipal department checks and monitors the UGM model, as commissioned by the city council.

According to Heidingsfelder, the preliminary talks on zoning laws will begin in the next few days, forming an essential foundation for rebuilding the UGM GbR, which has been located on the wholesale market for more than 30 years. "We assume that these talks will culminate in a concrete stage of negotiation in the short term, in order to enable a detailed planning basis for the new wholesale complex to be started quickly. How urgent the new building is needed, was shown lately by the blockage in the basement, that caused several traders to have to relocate."

This past summer, UGM published the first urban planning and architectural details for the alternative concept. The concept met with broad public approval - both at the city hall with the CSU and SPD, the FDP and the Greens as well as the Bavarian fruit trade association, the group of growers and the supporters of the initiative "Großmarkt in Sendling. Jetzt".

Urban impulses for the wholesale area
The plan includes office and residential areas on the site of the current UGM halls, in addition to the wholesale market itself. As a result, in comparison to the last planning variant of the city, an additional seven hectares of inner city space will be available for the future development of the district, which could be used for around 1,500 apartments. Heidingsfelder: "In the first step, we want to promote the construction of the Grossmarkthalle. This complex will be more than a functional building. With its cube-like superstructures for restaurants, offices or residential apartments, the future Grossmarkthalle can create important, trend-setting urban impulses for the entire area."
