Joep Jongmans, Special Fruit:

“Spanish mangoes slightly later because of cooler weather”

“The import mango season is currently in a transitional phase. The final mangoes from Israel are still on the market in small volumes,” says Joep Jongmans of Special Fruit. The first Brazilian mangoes are supplied in limited numbers, but more supply is expected as of mid-October. “There are currently much larger sizes on the market of both the final Israeli and the first Brazilian mangoes.”

The start of the Spanish mango season is slightly later than usual this year because of the cooler weather. “We expect the Spanish mangoes to be well-ripened with good sugar contents by the end of this week, so that they can be transported to Belgium,” Joep continues.

Exotic
Due to the supply of summer fruit, the consumption of mangoes decreases slightly in the summer months. “Just like demand for bananas and pineapple, demand for mangoes also decreases in summer. Yet we had good mango sales in recent months. The tropical weather in Europe probably had an effect on the sales of exotic mangoes,” Joep says.

Ready-to-Eat
“Mangoes are and will remain popular, particularly the Ready-to-Eat mangoes. Peru and Brazil are our most important origins for mangoes. The most important sales markets are Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia and the Central and Eastern European countries.” The import seasons from Israel and Western Africa are nearing their end, and Spain and Brazil are starting. “We always have to wait and see what the new season will bring,” Joep concludes.
