Christophe Couteleau, Le Rouge Gorge:

"The French melon market has been in crisis for 10 years"

With 30 thousand tons of melons marketed, Le Rouge Gorge is the leading producer of melons in France. Christophe Couteleau: "The market for French melons has been in crisis since 2008. This campaign is once again complicated, despite the fact that we really had all the conditions needed to be able to work miracles."

"We had very favorable weather conditions for production and consumption. We also had healthy crops, and the consumption was pretty good. Nevertheless, French producers have not been able to set sufficiently profitable prices. It may not have been a bad year, but we could have done a lot better."

The melons of Le Rouge Gorge are yellow Charentais melons, picked at maturity with more standard positioning. "The Red Gorge brand is known by consumers for its taste. Taste is really our priority."

Le Rouge Gorge includes three production sites: one in Malaga, Spain, one in the South, and one in the West of France. 95% of its products are destined for the French market. "As they’re picked at maturity, our Charentais melon is difficult to export. The company only exports melons to neighbouring countries, such as Belgium, and Switzerland.
