France: "Surfaces planted with traditional shallots in decline"

"After a catastrophic 2017/2018 season for French shallot producers during which the price was barely ¼ of the production cost, planted areas were unsurprisingly down this year," said Prince de Bretagne.

"In addition, with the atypical weather conditions experienced in Brittany this year, shallot yields are, on average, down. The situation differs from one sector to another, but it’s still too early to give a volume forecast. On the positive side, with the very good quality of this year the sorting differences will be small and will limit this decrease in quantity a little.”

According to Prince de Bretagne, "quantity and quality are the key words of this season. While some growers sometimes see a slight decrease in yield due to late planting, this is offset by an increase in planted area."
