Italy: Demand increasing for organic sprouts

Summer was positive for sprouts, especially for the new products introduced before the summer season, reports Andrea Farnedi from Vivo.

"Feedback was excellent for melon sprouts, perfect if paired with cured ham and melon slices. But the sales of all sprouts increased. As usual in summer, sales in seaside areas grew, while retail sales slowed down."

Vivo's turnover grew during the first few months of 2018 compared to 2017 thanks to the new facility as well as to the new products and clients. "Microgreens are also doing well, especially in the H&R sector. We have around 20 products available that can be packaged in 6 or 12-pot packets."

Vivo supplies 45 products in total, including organic ones. In order to promote its sprouts, Vivo took part in SANA in Bologna, where it talked to consumers as well as retail procurement managers and distributors.

"To grow organic sprouts, we need to start with organic-certified seeds. The other steps are similar to those of standard sprouts."
