Good expectations for Angeleno plums

The harvesting of Angeleno plums in Emilia-Romagna is in full swing. Cristian Moretti, director of Agrintesa, is optimistic about it as quality is very good and quantities aren't high.

Cristian Moretti

"As regards our cooperative, we will have 10-15% less produce. In other areas, there is even fewer fruit. Grades are good and so is quality - things are looking excellent."

The high temperatures in September are pushing consumption both in Italy and Europe.

Angeleno is an international plum variety that combines excellent flavor and shelf-life. Each market has its needs: the British market prefers plums not very ripe, with a light yellow flesh and without the ocher streaks that develop with a higher sugar content.

Other foreign markets are Canada, South America, Dubai, the Arab Emirates and northern Europe.

"Our cooperative collects 23 thousand tons of plums a year, 13 thousand of which of the Angeleno variety. 70% of the fruit is commercialized abroad and, thanks to the long shelf-life in units, sales continue until December. This is made possible by the fact that we sort fruit dividing it according to the ripening level as well as other parameters. An additional sorting is carried out in the following months."
