Spain: Almeria cucumber down to second place due to the Netherlands

The cucumber from the province of Almeria is in a situation that is getting worse because countries like the Netherlands or Scandinavia also started producing and this is going to do some damage to cucumbers from Spain. In fact, Manuel Arévalo, commercial director for Nature Choice, explained that "the last weeks were characterized, in our production, by the low prices (no more than 30 cents per kilo) of cucumber, not due to production volume in Almería, but because in the Netherlands they're are in full production and in Scandinavia they're getting kilo after kilo of cucumber.

Countries like Germany, England or the Netherlands, in general, lean more on countries that just started their production, so, they get out of our market".
In fact, Javier Casares, commercial for Ejidomar, indicated that "for buyers it is less appealing twhere the cucumber is recently harvested.

Effectively, quality is not the same and that makes clients to want a freshly collected product. And, in fact, the markets that are distancing themselves from our product are the Netherlands, Nordic countries and England".

Another problem that showed up some months ago is that cucumber, courgette or aubergine are low in price, and for reasons that have nothing to do with the time of campaign. According to information from Andrés Góngora, provincial secretary for COAG, "the problem of the prices is very complicated. The product is selling well and there's nothing to throw away, but the problem is in the markets that don't want to pay more than what they're already paying. To that, we can add the fact that we have the problem of not learning and while we can throw away all those kilos, the rest passes to a second plan". Courgette and aubergine have bad quotations and no change is expected.
