Onions New Zealand Independent Chair appointment

Onions New Zealand has appointed long-time horticulture industry exponent Michael Ahern to the position of independent chairman.

Michael has held critical roles in the rapid expansion of New Zealand horticulture since starting out in the kiwifruit industry in the 1970s.

In his more than 30 years in the industry Michael has accumulated a breadth of experience as he has participated in the evolution of horticulture at every level and across many products.

“I have watched the trends in retail and consumer demand over the years which gives me a pretty good insight into where the challenges and opportunities lie for the future, particularly in international markets,” Michael says.

Michael brings a great depth of knowledge to Onions New Zealand in terms of practical business management and governance, as well as the ability to think strategically.

“I like to think I can relate to growers, because I’ve got a practical hands-on understanding of dealing with customers, suppliers and markets.”

In the 1990s Michael established his own exporting business, Greenz Growlink, which was incorporated into the Freshmax Group in 2001. Michael was General Manager of Freshmax Exports until 2008.

More recently Michael has been involved through his Primary Services Limited consultancy with the J M Bostock Group – a producer and exporter of a range of horticultural products.

Michael has served on a variety of industry bodies and is a past vice-Chairman of the NZ Horticulture Exporters Council.
