Holland: 'Proof' supplied during open day Tomato Experience Centre

In a pleasant atmosphere, in which the introduction of the Living-Proof campaign could not have gone unnoticed to the many visitors, Monsanto Vegetable Seeds organised the Open Day Experience Centre (TEC) on 22 September 2010. This was the meeting place for the present and future supply of tomato varieties by De Ruiter Seeds. It was the tenth consecutive time that the Open Day was held at TEC in    's-Gravenzande, Holland.

As usual visitors were in a position to compare De Ruiter Seeds' tomato varieties in all colours, tastes and differences, both in plant form and in display cases. Promises for this season are cherry plum tomatoes DSC 2013, cherry tomatoes on the vine DRC564, beef tomatoes DRW 7749 and plum tomatoes Prunus and visitors knew how to judge these introductions very well.

In addition there was also space for a different experience. During the open day a quick scan of the stem could be done with a chance to win 1 HA of lower stem seeds and there was the opportunity to join a 'blind' tasting test of cherry tomatoes. The quick scan on www.rootmap.nl gives an indication to growers which lower stem goes best with which cultivation conditions and personal preference.

From the quickscan during the open day Maxifort and Optifort were the best. The quickscan is meant as advise about the best lower stem to be used for cultivation, followed by a more extensive discussion with one of the advisers from De Ruiter Seeds.

The taste test of cherry tomatoes was received with enthusiasm. Two different colour stages were developed on three different harvesting dates of one variety. The six different cherry tomatoes had to be tasted blindfolded and judged on taste. The conclusions of these taste tests will be published shortly. This year as well many discussions on De Ruiter Seeds' tomatoes took place and experiences were exchanged and of course it was a pleasant meeting as well.
