Sri Lanka: Imported potatoes - farmers facing stiff competition

The Government should impose an import tax to protect 15,000 Uva Province Potato farmer families, Uva Provincial Councillor S.A.R. Bandusena said yesterday.

“Potato farmers in the Welimada, Bandarawela, Haputale and Uva Paranagama area are facing stiff competition from imported potatoes,” Mr. Bandusena said. According to him previously during the harvest season the Government imposed an import tax to protect local farmers.

Mr. Bandusena said that the farmers needed a steady price since they had spent over Rs. 30000 on 50 kg of potatoes. At present these local farmers sell 1kg of potatoes at Rs.55 in Welimada, Mr. Bandusena said.

However Member of Parliament Dimuth Lokubandara said that in the Haputale area the farmers were selling 1kg of potatoes at Rs. 60 and in Colombo it was sold for Rs. 90.
