NL: US onion processor chooses Dofra Foodtec onion peeler

River Point Farms in Oregon, USA after a selection and evaluation process have chosen onion peelers from Dofra Foodtec in Horst, Holland. The company River Point Farms came into being as a result of cooperation between them and American Onion and CIC Partners from Dallas. The company has grown, packed and processed a large variety of onions, from white to sweet red, from Colossals (the size of a small football) and Jumbo's to Medium sized onions since April 2007. Last year the production  was an enormous 490 million pounds of onions, more than 220 million kgs.
Since 2008 River Point Farms have been concentrating on the topping, tailing and peeling of onions. They carried out a suppliers' selection for this and compared the available onion peelers with each other. At the end of 2009 Dofra BV in Horst was chosen to be the most suitable supplier of onion peelers. Important criteria at the selection for River Point Farms were productivity, reliability (continuity) and food safety. Regularly assessments are executed by the company Quality Assessments and audits by the company itself, by AIB International and USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture).

In the beginning of 2010 Dofra received the instruction to supply two onion peelers of type OP-100 in order to verify whether the machines would really be able to satisfy all rigid requirements of River Point Farms. It became clear last month that the onion peelers came through this practice test, when the management of River Point Farms placed an order for four onion peelers of the same type.

During August the machines will start producing. From then onwards there is a real possibility, that the onion on a Subway sandwich (River Point Farms supply 33,000 Subway restaurants) has been processed by a quality machine from Horst.
