UK: ShopRite to open a new supermarket in Southbury

ShopRite will open a new supermarket in Southbury at the site of a former Shaw's Supermarket on Wednesday.

The new store -- located at 775 Main Street South -- will hold a ceremony to celebrate its opening and welcome its first customers at 9 a.m., said Elisabeth Loeb, a spokesperson for Wakefern Food Corp., the Keasbey, N.J.-based supermarket cooperative to which all owners of ShopRite supermarkets belong.

Following Wednesday's opening, the Main Street South supermarket will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days per week, Loeb said.

The 60,000-square-foot store will open with about 200 full and part-time employees, Loeb said.

The new supermarket will have an array of groceries and fresh produce, as well as a fresh bake shop, fresh meats and seafood, and a full selection of natural and organic products in all departments. It will also feature a floral shop and a broad selection of prepared and hot foods for dining in or taking out, including a fresh-made sushi bar, sandwich shop and gourmet olive bar.

The store will also contain a ShopRite Pharmacy.

The completely renovated store has been fully outfitted with energy-efficient lighting and equipment, Loeb said. It has also been given a completely new interior look with wider aisles, bright lighting and an easy to follow floor plan, she said.

Wakefern provides goods and services, such as procurement, warehousing, transportation, distribution and advertising, to the 46 companies and individuals who own and operate the 217 ShopRite stores in six states [Dash] Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Wakefern itself owns and operates 27 ShopRite stores and all 43 PriceRite stores. PriceRite is the discount affiliate of ShopRite, with stores located in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

There are 22 ShopRite locations and nine PriceRite stores in Connecticut.

The Southbury ShopRite is owned and operated by the Cingari family, who have been in the supermarket business since 1943, through three generations. Through their Norwalk-based company, Grade A Markets Inc., the family operates nine ShopRite stores, including seven in Fairfield County and two in New Haven County.

"We are pleased to bring this new ShopRite to the community of Southbury," Sam Cingari, vice president of Grade A Markets, said in a statement.

"It's our second store in New Haven County and our family looks forward to bringing our Grade A reputation for excellent customer service to our new location. We have hired more than 200 associates from the local community and our store manager lives nearby. They will carry on our tradition of bringing top-notch service to our friends and neighbors."
