Brazil: Improvements in melon production could increase exports

In the region of San Francisco (Brazil), there will be lots of advances in the competitiveness of the sector in the following months. A packaging house owned by the State will be located in the Miunicipality of La Floresta, the main growing region of melons in Pernambuco. Also there are plans to change irrigation methods in order to increase the production that currently reach 10.000 tons per year.

The packaging house has an area of 860 square meters and it is expected to be finished by August this year. As a result, exports from this new packaging house will start in the 2011 season. Around 200 small growers (400 hectares) will benefit directly of these advances.

On the other hand the irrigation process is expected to be changed totally by 2012, with this advance the productivity is expected to almost double, from 25 tons per hectare to 40 tons per hectare.
