Sri Lanka: Vegetable prices soar in Dambulla area

The consumers in Dambulla area expressed concern for the sharp increase in the prices of vegetables.

They pointed out that the retail prices of vegetables increased by 100 per cent of the wholesale prices further burdening the people who are already facing hardships due to the high cost of living.

The wholesale  traders said they were not in a position to meddle with the retail prices. However, the retail traders pointed out that they were compelled to cover the losses incurred to them by the rotting of vegetables on rainy days and the increasing cost of transport.  Meanwhile, the residents of the area said that bread was not available at the reduced price and the price of a loaf of bread was still Rs.40.
