Egypt: SONAC biggest coldstore in the Middle East

In the east and west of the Nile delta SONAC control operations on over 3700 Ha (9143 acres) of sandy soil, with a full range of machinery to provide their customers with high quality potatoes. Seeds are imported and multiplied locally for further plantation, a 5000 ton coldstore is available solely for this purpose. The potatoes are in pest free areas and are harvested semi-automatically. The table varieties are, amongst others, Nicola, Spunta, Mondial and Simone. Varieties for processing are Lady Rosetta, Hermes and Diamont.

SONAC also produce various varieties of onion. The White onion season is mid March to the end of May, the Golden onion, end of April to the end of July (fresh) and Red onions from August to October (reserved).

Since the Ď70s SONAC has been operating its own packing line in Damanhour near Alexandria (Egyptís 1st commercial port), through the generations SONAC has expanded and now have three additional packhouses throughout Egypt, in Salheya, Nuberiyah and Wadi Notron.

In 1994 they began producing Individual Quick Frozen (IQF) fruit and vegetables. They have installed the most up to date machinery and have applied the latest technological trends in quick freezing. SONACís aim is to provide the most nutritious fruit and veg which tastes so good it could be fresh. No preservatives or chemicals are added. When processing and exporting any agricultural product coldstorage is essential and for this process two coldstores with a total capacity of 10,000 tons were built within the companyís facilities. The IQF selection includes strawberries, spinach, mixed veg, orka and many more.

In the late Ď90s due to boom in the chipping industry SONAC built one of the most advanced coldstores in order to supply the industries needs with their top quality processing potatoes (Lady Rosetta and Hermes). The technique of storing in wooden bins placed SONAC as the biggest coldstore in the Middle East. As well as having fully automated storing operations, the temperature, relative humidity, CO2 and ventilation can all be controlled by computer. Due to this success they have been able to double the capacity to 12,000 tons in wooden bins for 8 months.
