China: positive apple season for Hengfeng Fresh

Established in 2005, Hengfeng Fresh Produce Co. Ltd is one of the leading agriculture produce suppliers in China, specializing in processing fruit and vegetables. Fruit is mainly grown in the regions of Shandong, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.

“Hengfeng Fresh started harvesting their apples in July and is expecting to continue until October. Gala and Red Star apples are in high production and will be on the market in the third week of August. Developed in New Zealand, Gala apples were introduced to China and have become the early variety harvested by HengFeng Fresh. The current price is around $650/mt Fob China,” explains Hengfeng's director Peter Li.

“Other varieties like Huaniu apple (Red Delicious), Golden Delicious and Fuji apples will be on the market early September and October. Fuji apples are mainly exported abroad by Hengfeng Fresh. All in all, there has been a tremendous increase in exporting different varieties of apples in the past few years,” he says.

The total estimated yield of Hengfeng Fresh for this year is almost the same as last year  despite the fact that there were areas affected by natural disaster. According to Mr Li the price will be a little bit higher than last year due to strong domestic demand.

“In general, Chinese apples are still facing big challenges entering the EU market because of the quality and safety regulations imposed. In order to meet these demands, Chinese fruit exporters are finding new solutions to improve the quality of fruit from planting, processing, packaging and even transporting it,” reveals Mr. Li.

Hengfeng Fresh is certified by GlobalGap.
