"Raspberry season starts in ernest next week"
First openfield berries harvested at BerryBrothers

Soft fruit company BerryBrothers from Roggel, Holland has begun to pick Dutch open field blackberries, raspberries, red currants and blueberries. BerryBrothers grow soft fruit on 40 hectares. The first blueberries are now being harvested. Albert van Zuilen from BerryBrothers says that they can preserve blueberries until the end of October.

The harvest of the red berries from the tunnels will finish this week, then the first can be picked from the open fields. The harvest looks good according to Albert, "although there is still a bit less available than last year. At the moment the Junifer variety is being picked. The red currants are also packed and cool-stored by us", he says.

The Dutch raspberries from open field shall be on the market from next week. Albert says they will begin to harvest covered outside berries this week. "The quality of the product is good but there is less available due to a winter frost", he says. The blackberries are also doing well. Firstly the blackberries under plastic will be picked for 6 weeks and then for another 8 weeks from the open field. "After this we will keep going under glass 'till December."

The harvest is marketed by BerryBrothers under the brand name Berry Stars and Berry Fresh. A good summer is important for the sales of soft fruit. "Temperatures between 20 and 25°C are ideal for us so let the warm weather continue", says Albert.
