Capros Unleashes the Synergy of Superfruits

Two superfruits are better than one. That is what a new study from Natreon, Inc. analyzing in vitro and ex vivo assays points to as the new frontier in superfruit formulation manufacturing.

According to the study, Capros® antioxidant superfruit, developed from Phyllanthus emblica, the Indian Gooseberry, shows great potential as a synergistic antioxidant ingredient in combination with other fruit juices and extracts. The implications for development of an even more ‘super’ superfruit substance are vast, as the study shows that Capros® combined with popular pomegranate fruit extracts and juices means increased potency for even more powerful and long-lasting health benefits. Capros® patented nutritional supplement ingredient can positively impact health and vitality as a cascading antioxidant ingredient - and can give an antioxidant boost to other superfruit beverages, compounds and ingredients.

Conducted at the Natreon, Inc. facilities in Kolkata, India, the study utilized four of the most sensitive in vitro screening systems for determination of antioxidant potential - ABTS, DPPH, FRAP and ORAC - as well as some ex vivo assays, to measure if a combination of Capros® and pomegranate extracts could achieve synergism. Synergy results when the activity of two or more compounds in a mixture is more than that of the simple sum of the individual compounds when used separately. In all studies, fortification with Capros® resulted in substantial improvement to the overall antioxidant profile of the mixture.

“These results are quite remarkable, and may open up a whole new way of looking at the potential applications of superfruit ingredients,” said Lucien Hernandez, President & CEO, Natreon, Inc. “While Capros® has a superior ORAC value on its own, it is exciting to see that its antioxidant powers can boost other superfruit compounds to unheard-of heights.”

This and other studies show that Capros® in particular is proving to be the must-have superfruit to help overcome oxidative stress, as well as the go-to ingredient for superior product efficacy. The study also showed an interesting result when looking at the edible parts of the fresh fruits of Indian Gooseberry and pomegranate. It was found that the antioxidant compounds of pomegranate mainly reside in the pericarp of the fruit, not traditionally consumed by humans, whereas the antioxidant compounds of the Gooseberry resident in the mesocarp, which is consumed by people. Appreciable synergism between the juices extracted from the edible parts was observed. Further studies showed that Capros® fortification in commercial pomegranate juices or concentrates improve the antioxidant potential of the juice.
