Innovations and vegetable varieties at Bakker Brothers open days 2018

The Bakker Brothers open days - with the theme ‘Proud Heritage, bright Future’ - are all about inspiration and knowledge exchange. Every day from 9.00 to 17.00 hrs there are guided tours by cultivation specialists and the sales team for clients and business relations from all over the world. They can admire new varieties in beans, sweetcorn and carrots and visit our demo fields with vegetable varieties suitable for both fresh market and the processing industry.

The connoisseur will find both the well-known, commercially available varieties and new varieties and will get a clear picture of new developments in the Bakker Brothers’ range. In the exhibition space crops are shown that are often grown in the Middle East, Africa and southern Europe, regions where Bakker Brothers is active. There is also a demo in the greenhouse with indeterminate tomatoes, hot peppers, peppers, stick beans and aubergines.

Bakker Brothers has put together a selection of their latest open field and indoor assortment for both fresh- and processing markets across their targeted distribution area. New varieties in beans, sweetcorn and carrots will take the center stage during the open days of Bakker Brothers in Noord-Scharwoude, from 25 to 28 September 2018. Professionals in the vegetable seed sector worldwide are introduced to a range of novelties in seed breeding, production and distribution.

New carrot varieties
New introductions and remarkable varieties receive special attention in the demo fields. For both the fresh market and the processing industry, new varieties in carrots - one of the most important crops of Bakker Brothers and specialties, are available. Including the Marlin variety, a fast grower with about 95 growth days. It can be used for fresh packaging. It has few green heads, a deep intense red-orange color and is strong against growth doors.

The ABK type BB CAR 0283, is a new and versatile variety and can also be seen. It is a cylindrical carrot that can be used as a snack carrot due to its sweet taste. The variety is also suitable for A-carrot and fine industrial carrots.

Newcomer for the processing industry is Flakkee type BB CAR 0567 with strong and healthy foliage, which is strong against green heads and has good storage properties. The beautiful internal color makes this variety extremely suitable for juice, slices, grated roots and for the fresh market in the coarser segment of C-D carrots.

Range of strong bean varieties expanded
In the range of strong bean varieties for the processing industry, bakker brothers added a number of new varieties. Two important varieties are Caledonia and Elba, which guarantee a high percentage of very fine, nicely grouped beans (6.5 - 8 mm) with excellent quality. Both can be sowed under difficult conditions and have a good return. For the Òne beans (8 - 9 mm) the very early variety Tempo (90 days) is recommended. This bean has excellent results and produces quality pulses with a beautiful uniform color. In the fine segment, the Saba and Lavezzi varieties are winners for the fresh market as well as for industry. Both varieties have a good potential return and are real all-rounders.

Celebrating our heritage and bright future
90 Years ago, in 1928, the company Gebroeders Bakker Zaadteelt en Zaadhandel, was started by two pioneering brothers. This year we are celebrating the vision, development and success of this venture. We dived into the past and found some historical pictures and relics of those days gone by. A small photo presentation will be part of our open days for your interest and to let you in on the celebration.

If you are interested in visiting our open days, please let us know so you can be assured a sales representative is waiting for you to take you through the fields.
