Meat and dairy spending higher than for fruits and vegetables

Swiss consumers spend less and less on food

Food expenditure in Switzerland continues to decline. The least is spent on fruits - 32 francs, says market report Agriculture and Food Industry of the BLW market analysis department. According to the BLW, the decline can be explained by a shift in household expenditure towards more out-of-home consumption and convenience products, which is related to the changed ways of life today (for example, time, mobility).

Potatoes most important
The main products of fruits and vegetables are potatoes with 21.2 kg, apples with 16.6 kg, bananas with 15 kg, carrots with 13.1 kg and tomatoes with 10.3 kg. The BLW analysis shows that the demand for potatoes and carrots has clearly decreased by 16% and 11% respectively, compared to the same period of the previous period of June 2016 to May 2017. Tomatoes, on the other hand, saw an increase of 2%.

In the case of fruits, the demand for bananas (+17%) and strawberries (+26%) has increased significantly compared to the same period of the previous year, and that of apples is subject to strong fluctuations.
