Pomodoro di Pachino IGP is the leading product from Sicily

The 10th edition of Festa del Pomodoro di Pachino IGP was held in August. Pachino tomatoes have traditionally been considered niche products, which meant producers could conquer a special space not only on the market but also in the perception of final consumers. Just think of the often tacit association of the term Pachino with cherry tomatoes to have an idea of the success of this product.

A moment during the event

The good work carried out by Consorzio di Tutela del Pomodoro di Pachino IGP over the past 5 years has led to a 142% increase in production and to a 174% percent increase of the value produced. These tomatoes have therefore occupied the first place among the local products and the 7th place in Italy.

The conventions part of the event revealed the "need to relaunch the 'pomodoro di Pachino Igp' brand, improving the marketing of a product with unique characteristics. We also need to maintain a direct contact with consumers and focus on innovation and research, without neglecting promotion and safeguarding activities. The consortium works and has a positive influence on the product. Consumer opinions have a positive effect on the real chain, which cannot but take into consideration the added value provided by the Pgi mark."

The President of the consortium Salvatore Lentinello (in the photo above) underlined the importance of Progetto Produttori with the vice-president of producer members Sebastiano Dipietro and the vice-president of packager members Giovanni Iuvara.

"It's an important initiative with which we wanted to become even more important on our territory. We want the area to be considered as a whole, as the product must be perceived as coming from the entire production territory."

"The fact that the Institutions have also taken part to the event is a sign that we're on the right path," explained Consortium director Salvatore Chiaramida.

Fondazione Qualivita director Mauro Rosati also took part to the event and provided valuable advice.
