Symposium Bejo, Hagranop in Sanlucar de Barrameda (Cadiz)

Growing organic and conventional carrots in Southern Spain

On Wednesday, 5 September, a Symposium was held, organized by Bejo Spain and Hagranop from Tollebeek, the Netherlands. Many cultivation and processing companies from the Sevilla–Cadiz region were invited to come and exchange ideas. The symposium's goal was to evaluate the past season and to look ahead to the coming spring. The opening and welcoming speeches were given by Christiaan Reijnders of Bejo Spain Mardi de Graaf from Hagranop. 


Peter Rinkel gave the first presentation. Among other things, he looked back at the problematic export season. This difficult period was caused by the wet weather conditions. He asked those in attendance to help come up with a solution on how to sufficiently spread out the cultivation across the new season (from March until June 2019). He sees good opportunities for organic carrots, among other products. Hagranop trades in organic as well as conventional products. These products include carrots, onions, parsnips, red beets, potatoes, endive root, and root parsley.



Various presentations by Claris ten Napel (Spanish early potato variety opportunities), Maria Ibanez (Bejo, B-mox ) Christoffel den herder (Delphy advice; ridge planting for organic carrots), and Jaime Fernandez (Kiwa, certifications) were then given. This was followed by an extensive presentation by Wim Zwaan about breeding carrots with Bejo seeds. The symposium ended with a lunch where everyone could chat informally.
