Peru: Cape gooseberry causes a sensation worldwide

Berry consumption, in its different varieties, has become fashionable because of the great amount of antioxidants they have. The most outstanding berry varieties include blueberries, strawberry, raspberry, and especially, the cape gooseberry, which is also known as Golden Berry, in Europe and in the United States.

Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) is a 100 percent Peruvian fruit, native to the Andes, that has been cultivated since ancestral times. Now the world knows it and enjoys its abundant concentration of vitamins. It has been known since the time of the Incas.

Currently, several regions of Peru have the potential to produce this fruit, such as Ancash, La Libertad, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, Ayacucho, Lima, Junin, Huanuco, and Cusco.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has identified the potential of the regions of Ancash, La Libertad, Lambayeque, and Ayacucho to produce this fruit for export purposes. The Regional Export Plan (PERX) of the aforementioned regions considers it a priority to improve their offer. Cape gooseberry is a superfood, as it has vitamin A, vitamin complex B and C, a high sample of protein and phosphorus, which can improve people's diet and health. The fruit of this wild plant is round, small, and yellow. It is 1.25 centimeters long and has a diameter of 2 centimeters, on average.

Currently, the United States and some European markets have the greatest demand for aguaymanto. England and Germany are the main consumers.
