Avocado grower seminar to discuss pest management and biological control agents

Index Fresh will host its 20th Avocado Growers Seminar Series this September with experts addressing integrated pest management in avocados and biological control agents. The seminars will be held in Ventura on 9/11, San Luis Obispo on 9/12, and Fallbrook on 9/13.

The avocado company hosts seminars every year in the growing regions of California. By inviting leading experts in the field, Index Fresh says these seminars address relevant topics on grove management, pest control, export market trends, labor, soil science, avocado nutrition, and so on.

The guest speakers for the 20th grower seminar series by Index Fresh are:
  • Tom Roberts, Entomologist, PCA; Integrated Consulting Entomology — will present at all three sessions.
  • Anna D. Howell, Entomologist; UC Cooperative Extension Ventura County — will present at the Ventura and San Luis Obispo sessions.
  • Jim Davis, Entomologist, PCA; San Diego and Riverside Counties, Entomological Services, Inc. — will present at the Fallbrook session.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of pests or their damage through a combination of techniques such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant cultivars. (University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources)

In an Index Fresh grower newsletter, entomologist Tom Roberts writes — “California avocados benefit from a long history of IPM. Proper disease management helps influence IPM in avocados. Healthy trees are able to withstand the effects of pests better and reduce the need for pesticide applications.”

On September 11, 12 and 13, the three expert entomologists will discuss biological, chemical, and cultural control of pests in Integrated Pest Management. To RSVP, contact Susan Soto at Ssoto@IndexFresh.com or (+1) 909-877-0999 ext. 258.
