Beet options and demand continue to grow

"We receive calls from all over the country for beets"

Supplies of domestic beets are currently a little weak.

“We’re receiving calls from different parts of the country,” says Geoffrey Ratto of Modesto, Ca.-based Ratto Brothers. “And supply last year seemed to be a little weaker than it currently is.”

Ratto notes that product is coming out of Arizona, Mexico and the Northwest.

Over at Love Beets, Natasha Lichty notes that there also seems to be a lack of organic beet farms to meet their demand. The company works with growers out of upstate New York via its production facility in Rochester. In addition, it sources out of Colorado and Georgia if needed.

“We’re working with some of our existing farmers to become certified organic. It’s a lot of work for the farmers and can take some education as well. A lot of them have been growing beets for a really long time so converting over to organic can be a big change and big investment,” says Lichty.

More product coming
That said, Ratto notes that for traditional beets, product should be more available in the coming weeks. With demand coming from around the country, it’s pushing prices up slightly, as high as $11.55.

Geoffrey Ratto says consumption of beets is increasing.

Ratto also notes that consumption will continue to grow as consumers become more knowledgeable on the benefits of beets. “The value-added sector continues to grow but we stick to bunching and bagging beets,” says Ratto.

Products such as these from Love Beets continue to expand the category.

New beet products
However, companies such as Love Beets are working with a variety of beet products and continue to expand its product line—this includes a 1 lb. bag of beet powder, diced Honey + Vinegar Golden Beets, vacuum-packed golden beets and golden beet salsa.
