Largest price increase for seasonal green vegetables

China: Laiwu vegetable prices increase sharply

Vegetable prices recently showed a continuous increase. The price of coriander, for example, sharply increased to 50 yuan [7.32 USD] per 0.5 kg. Citizens immediately shouted that vegetable prices increased too quickly. The sudden price increase in one week was the result of severe rain and seasonal price increases. The price of green vegetables, which are difficult to store, increased most visibly, while the price of easily stored onions fluctuated very little.

Vegetables follow the seasons. In the summer they gradually leave the market and in autumn they have not yet entered the market in large volumes, which means that the price of vegetables goes up in autumn every year. This year, however, the seasonal price increase coincided with an additional price increase that was the result of extreme weather conditions. Shandong Province was hit by a typhoon and rainfall significantly increased in comparison with the same period in the previous year. Shouguang, a key area in the vegetable industry, suffered severe damage. The supply shortage that was the result of extreme weather conditions added to the sudden price increase. The average price of vegetables increased by 2-4 yuan [0.29-0.59 USD], while the price of green vegetables increased by 6 yuan [0.88 USD] or in some cases even as much as 20 yuan [2.93 USD].
