"China: "New Zealand apples dominate the market"

"The period around the Mid Autumn Festival, which takes place on 24 September this year, was previously the peak period for imported US fruits, but this year circumstances have changed. Up until now, only a small amount of US cherries have entered the Chinese market. Some of those cherries have been air freighted to China instead of shipped by sea as is traditional." This is according to Mike Hoare from Shanghai Guohai Trading Co., Ltd.

"While the Sino-US trade war undoubtedly increased the cost price of imported US fruits, it also led to a decreased volume of US fruits on the Chinese market. We think, however, that this does not mean that US fruits will be completely replaced on the Chinese market by fruits imported from other countries. After all, the two main aspects of sales conditions are market demand and product quality. The price only comes third."

The market position of New Zealand apples therefore remains unchanged, even though the cold weather earlier this year has reduced Chinese domestic apple production, which provides many Chinese apple farmers with unexpected business opportunities."
