Gerrit de Vlieger, Vrijders Wholesalers

"Top fruit prices very volatile"

"There is currently an ample supply of top fruit. It is too early to give a prognosis for the season, but it looks promising", says Gerrit de Vlieger of Groothandel Vrijders. "The quality is good, and sizes are a bit small. However, I do not expect this to become a problem. Prices are very erratic. The new harvest is selling at a high price, but prices could fall again tomorrow."

Summer apples like the Delbare are selling well at the moment. "Their season will be over again within two weeks. We already have Elstar apples as well as Conference pears. We are still selling the old crop of Van Jonagold apples. There are still a few left, contrary to reports that they were all gone", says this Belgian wholesaler. Jonagolds are still the number one apple in Belgium. "However, there needs to be more focus on this variety. Then they will sell even better. Consumers need to regain trust in the Jonagold."

'Pear with a future'
Besides the well-known Conference and Doyenné du Comice, Vrijders also has the QTee pear in its assortment. "We have had the QTee as part of our range for a few years now. We are very pleased about this. It is a pear with a bright future. It tastes good, and the clients who buy them always come back for more. It is a nice looking pear. That appeals to people. It is good to see that people are not only trying the popular varieties but also new ones", concludes Gerrit.
