Kees Oskam: “If we can do it mechanically, we should do it mechanically”

Photo report of open day for new company building Oskam-Neerijnen

This week, Handelsmaatschappij Oskam celebrated the expansion of their company building at sub-location Neerijnen with an open day. The new site of 3,500 m2 has room for two modern sorting lines and packing machines. Although the timing, at the start of the harvest, could be called daring, a lot of people from fruit production and trade showed up to witness the modern packing facilities.

The Oskam family.

“We planned to start our harvest on 3 September, but nature caught up with us. We even considered rescheduling our open day, but in the end, we didn’t think a better moment could be feasible than right now with the beautiful full fields,” says Kees Oskam. “Interest from supplying growers was understandably less because of this, but colleague-traders, interest groups, neighbours, family and acquaintances were well-represented. We’ll look back on a wonderful day.”

Good crowds.

The starting point of the new building was to be well-equipped for the future, according to the owner of the independent fruit trading and production company. “At our location in Vleuten, we no longer have expansion options, and we want to go forward. In future, we’ll have to take good care of our workers, because good ones are becoming more difficult to find. If we can do it mechanically, we should be doing it mechanically. In this new building with spaciously set up sorting and packing lines, we’ll have plenty of room for that.”
