Pierre Sweep:

“Everyone’s happy in the celeriac business”

Although the dry weather will probably have a major impact on the new celeriac season, the market situation is looking positive, according to Pierre Sweep of A&P Sweep from Zevenbergen, the Netherlands. “It’s happening. A lot of customers were away for a month because of local productions, but they’re now all returning, The old celeriac are still good quality, and factories want to safeguard their stocks, so that demand from industry is now in full swing. Our stocks of old celeriac has now decreased from thousands to hundreds of tonnes.”

“The impact of the dry weather on the new celeriac will become clear in December. If the weather stays good, the production could recover quite well. In the past week, we were all surprised about how well everything recovers, but the production is still not caught up,” Pierre continues. “We’re now hoping that if there is less production, we’ll be able to sell everything on the fresh market. In any case, factories are safeguarding themselves by making sure they have plenty of winter stocks.”

“We get demand from all over Europe. From Germany to France, Poland, the UK, the Czech Republic, Norway and Sweden, and we even regularly export to Greece. All in all, we’re not complaining, because everyone in the celeriac business is happy. Prices are very good, so that both farmers, we and our buyers can make a profit. It just goes to show, each year is different from what you expect,” Pierre concludes.
