The quality of Norwegian strawberries was lacking in many instances during the inspections by the Norwegian inspection of goods service last summer. The problems were present in all investigated supermarket chains, Rema 1000, Kiwi, Coop Extra, Meny og Coop Mega.
Both in June and August mouldy strawberries were found during the inspection. The fungus isn't dangerous, but is detrimental to flavour. And a single affected strawberry in the tray can affect all the other strawberries. The mould spreads quickly due to the high moisture content of the strawberries. According to the supermarkets the dry weather has made it impossible to guarantee an optimal quality. This summer season was hard for both growers and supermarkets as the strawberries ripened extremely quickly due to the heat. The supermarkets are in consultation regarding the measures for improvement.
