"China: Avocados lose "elite status"

The consumer demand for avocados is growing vigorously in Harbin. This year, however, the avocado price is lower than last year. Each avocado is 1-3 yuan [0.15-0.44 USD] cheaper. Since market demand is crazy, avocado supplies increased by 40% in comparison with last year. The price is therefore lower and more consumers showed their appreciation.

Many people in the industry say that production areas managed a sufficient supply this year and the avocado is no longer a rare product. In addition, more traders entered the avocado industry, and the increased competition further lowered the price. Apart from traditional avocado supplying countries such as Peru, Mexico, and Brazil, this year New Zealand also gained a foothold in the avocado market of Harbin. The wholesale price of New Zealand avocados is 10% higher than the avocado from traditional production areas, but they still sell well.
