Paraguay: Pineapple harvest starts in Guayaybi

Pineapple producers from different companies and colonies in Guayaybí began the early harvest of fruits that are being sold in the local market with an average price that ranges between G. 30,000 and 40,000 per box. Farmers expect to earn a good income with these sales.

According to estimates, there are about 500 hectares devoted to this crop in the different farms in the area, which is also characterized by the large number of banana crops.

Isidro Barrios, a producer and member of the August 23 Committee of 2nd Street Chachi Line, said he had started the early varieties of this crop in the first half of August and that they were already on sale locally, mainly in the Wholesale Market.

Regarding prices, Barrios said that you could buy the box of 24 medium fruits for G. 30,000 and the box of high quality 18 large sized fruits for G. 40,000.

One hundred hectares
He also said that his organization had about one hundred hectares of pineapple between their respective farms scattered within the colony, 30 percent of which are in the harvest stage. The associates are currently distributing their production in the domestic market, as they still don't have enough product to export.

Other producers
In addition to this agricultural organization, there are other groups of farmers and independent producers in the area that have also started harvesting the product and distributing it in the respective domestic market sales points while they wait for the export season start, according to producers.
