Austria: Lush apple harvest in Burgenland

On average, 14 kilograms of apples per person are consumed in Austria every year. Most of the fruits come from Burgenland, where the harvest will start two weeks earlier, despite the late flowering in spring. According to Burgenland Chamber of Agriculture President Nikolaus Berlakovich (ÖVP), the large yield will probably lead to lower prices.

"Our appeal to domestic consumers is that they can buy local apples," says Berlakovich, referring to the AMA label, which helps to differentiate domestic and imported fruits. This way the consumer can be sure to get truly Austrian goods.

The approximately 130 fruit farmers growing dessert apples in Burgenland on 410 hectares sometimes suffer from extreme weather conditions such as late frosts, drought, storms and hail. Therefore, Johann Plemenschits, President of the Burgenland Fruit Farmers Association, appealed to the politicians to optimize state support for quality assurance in fruit production. In addition, he expects a simplification of the regulations for irrigation and frost irrigation.
