Lidl accelerates pace of store openings in September

US: Shipt expands same-day delivery in Texas
Shipt, a leading online marketplace, today announced it will begin same-day delivery of an assortment of groceries and household essentials with two major retailers across ten Texas metro areas. Shipt will begin offering delivery from select retailers in the following markets: Bay City, Texas delivery from H-E-B beginning September 18. Brenham, Fredericksburg, Laredo, Stephenville and Granbury, Uvalde and Victoria, Texas delivery from H-E-B beginning August 30. Huntsville, Texas delivery from H-E-B, and Target beginning August 30 and San Angelo, Texas delivery from H-E-B and Target beginning August 30.

One of Canada's online grocers is going brick-and-mortar
While most online grocers figure out how to turn bricks-based transactions into clicks-based ones, one of them, north of the border, is currently doing the opposite: transferring its online success into a planned chain of brick-and-mortar stores. Fresh City Farms, an ecommerce grocer that delivers organic groceries and meals to online shoppers' doorsteps, is opening physical stores in Toronto. Next month in the city's west end, it will open its second brick-and-mortar location, a 2,000-square-foot store on Ossington Avenue that will carry around 1,000 SKUs, including organic and local produce, prepared meals such as jarred salads, cheese, fresh meat, organic meal kits, and dry goods from small, independent brands.

US: Lidl to accelerate pace of store openings in September
Lidl opened its 54th store this week in Indian Trail, North Carolina and plans to open three stores next month, according to the company. These include two D.C. area stores - one in Bowie, Maryland, which will open on September 12; the other in Dumfries, Virginia, which opens September 26 - along with a store in Concord, North Carolina, opening September 19. The Bowie location will be the discounter’s first store in Maryland. A company spokeswoman declined to elaborate on the company’s growth plans, but said it intends to open more stores in Maryland. “We are working on building out our store network in the state and that starts with our store in Bowie,” she told Food Dive. Lidl initially planned to open 100 locations by June of this year, but has had to slow its growth plans due to underperforming sales, reports note. The company has pulled out of store projects in several states, including Virginia, New Jersey and Alabama.

Mexico: Chedraui drives convenience expansion
Chedraui has reported consolidated sales growth of +21% in Q2 2018 to MXN27,942mln (US$1,473mln). Growth was mainly driven by the opening of new stores. However, same stores sales also grew by 1.8%. Despite the sales being positive Chedraui reported being negatively affected by the timing of Easter Week. In 2017 this week was in April, while in 2018 it was in March. Since August 2017 the retailer has opened 29 new stores, increasing sales floor capacity by 3.6%. Expansion plans continue with the aim of opening 12 regular and Super Chedraui supermarkets by the end of 2018. Chedraui sees its main expansion opportunity within the convenience channel. It plans to open 30 mini-supermarkets under the Super Che and Supercito banners by the end of 2018.

Singapore: RedMart partners Sainsbury's
Singapore's leading online supermarket, RedMart, has announced a partnership with Sainsbury's, one of UK's leading grocery retailers. RedMart will make 320 Sainsbury's products available exclusively to its customers from 29th August 2018. "RedMart and Sainsbury's have closely aligned values and both are committed to putting customers first and sourcing with integrity. Bringing a number of Sainsbury's ranges to Singapore via our popular online platform will meet our customer's increasing demand for quality products at great value," said Roger Egan III, CEO and co-founder of RedMart. Spar Poland sees 15% increase in turnover in first half
Spar Polska, the Polish arm of Spar International, has posted a 15% increase in turnover to PLN 550mln in the first half of its financial year. This is up from PLN 483mln for the same period last year, reports trade publication Dla Handlu. The improved performance is due to an increase in the average shopping basket, as well as a rise in turnover per square metre. Dla Handlu reported that Spar Polska's goal is to achieve PLN 1.2bln worth of turnover by the end of 2018, with particular focus being placed on the group's smaller supermarkets and convenience stores, such as its Spar Express outlets.

South Africa's Woolworths FY profit down 17.7%, misses estimates
South African retailer Woolworths reported a worse-than-expected 17.7% drop in annual earnings, hit by restructuring costs at its Australian unit and poor performance in its clothing business at home. Woolworths, which sells groceries, food and homeware, said headline earnings per share (EPS) for the year ended June declined to 346.3 cents versus a 380 cents estimate, or 9.7% fall, in a poll of 10 analysts by Thomson Reuters’ I/B/E/S.

Auchan Hungary: Retail chains expand, small shops suffer
The Hungarian unit of French retailer Auchan projects a more than 10% increase in net turnover this year, CEO Dominique Ducoux said. Meanwhile, the retail sector is struggling with a heavy labor shortage, with small shops hit particularly hard. Auchan, which operates 19 hypermarkets in Hungary, has opened towards smaller-scale stores, having opened its first supermarket in Szekszárd last year and its first superstore in Budapest in April, the CEO said. The company plans to open four new stores this year, including supermarkets in Győr and Zalaegerszeg and another superstore in Sopron, he added, cited by national news agency MTI. Including its 18 filling stations, Auchan Hungary had gross turnover of HUF 363.5 billion between April 1, 2017, and March 31, 2018, up 3.7% from a year earlier. Net revenue rose 5.4% to HUF 309.5 bln. After-tax profit increased almost 6% to HUF 3.8 bln.

Holland's Jumbo 2018 H1: +3.8% to €3.9bln
Netherlands-based Jumbo has released its results for the first half of 2018, reporting that consumer turnover rose by 3.8% to €3.9bln. During this period, the retailer opened six new stores and refurbished a further 29 stores. Jumbo said that ‘the turnover of orders ordered online via Jumbo.com and the Jumbo app increased by no less than two thirds in the first half of 2018’. This has seen a second ecommerce fulfilment centre open in May 2018 to add extra online capacity.

Portugal's Sonae step closer to listing food retail business
Portuguese holding company Sonae has taken decisive steps towards launching an initial offering (IPO) of its market leading food retail subsidiary, the co-chief executive of the company said. Sonae MC operates 173 Continente hypermarkets and large supermarkets and expects growth in the Portuguese market to be one of the fastest in Europe in coming years, including in smaller local stores. “The quarter was marked by results reached in terms of portfolio management, with decisive steps in the preparation of the potential IPO of Sonae MC,” said Angelo Pauperio, co-chief executive of Sonae.

UK: Iceland agrees to take over 19 Poundworld stores as Henderson deal falls through
Frozen food specialist Iceland has agreed in principle to take on 19 empty Poundworld stores. The news comes after it emerged Poundworld’s outstanding deal with the Henderson family fell through. Poundworld fell into administration in June and closed the last of its 335 stores earlier this month. On August 9, the Henderson family revealed they planned to bring the company back to profit by acquiring as many as 50 units and the Poundworld brand name, but the deal was never closed. Now the leases on many of the stores have been returned to landlords.

Tesco closes Polish stores
Tesco Poland announced the closure of 13 loss-making stores in August 2018. It will operate over 400 stores by the end of the year. Martin Behan, Managing Director of Tesco Poland, said the closures will support profitability. Mr. Behan said that the closures occurred in recent years and will continue to do so, “the liquidation of unprofitable stores is a permanent element of business processes in a trading company.” He stated that two factors were behind the decision for which stores to close. The store must achieve a break-even point and meet shopper expectations. These include store quality, the assortment offered, and customer service.
