Kenneth Meyer (Natural Tropic) over the start of the Spanish mango season:

"Mango volumes will normalise in the coming years"

Typically, the Spanish mango season starts at the beginning of September. This year, however, it will begin a bit later. "It was very hot in northern Europe over the last few months. Here in the south, it was somewhat cooler. This has resulted in a slight delay in the start of the season", says Kenneth Meyer of Natural Tropic from the Spanish city of Malaga.

A large number of mango trees have been planted in the region in recent years. The expectation is that the volumes will be about 25% higher this year. "The planted volumes are significant for the first time this year. I expect these volumes to become the norm in the years to come", says Kenneth. He is not afraid of an oversupply. "The market can handle this growth. It is not yet a case of thousands of hectares of mangos standing here. The volumes van Spanish mangos are not nearly as high as those coming from overseas."

"I am, therefore, optimistic about the season. Other production countries have fewer mangos available. The Tommy Atkins will be first on the market. The demand for this variety declines every year. We are going to have good volumes of our main variety, the Osteen, in week 37. The Keith will follow at the end of October", he says. Natural Tropic's mango acreage currently covers about 60 hectares. "This includes organic plantations. This amount of land is going to be expanded in the coming years", concludes Kenneth.
