Peru: Capsicum will be the star of Expoalimentaria

Expoalimentaria, the most important food fair in the region, which is expected to generate business for more than US $ 8.580 billion (i.e. US 20 million more than in the previous edition), will be held from September 26 to 28, stated Juan Varilias, the president of Adex.

"Expoalimentaria is celebrating its first decade. We have been patient and we have continued to promote it, despite the government's lack of receptivity. We have room to grow and conquer more destinations; we want to become the food pantry of the world," he said.

"In the nine previous editions we have had 45 participating countries, 11 of which are large countries and 12 are emerging countries in Asia. China has shown a 600% growth in exports," Varilias added.

The president of the exporting guild also highlighted that the capsicum, a product that has a high consumption in Asia and Europe, would be one of the star products being promoted in the Expoalimentaria 2018.

"A few years ago the star product was the asparagus, but it has been surpassed by blueberries, mangoes, grapes, and avocado, among other products. Peru is increasingly positioning itself as the main exporter of capsicum, which has very good conditions to grow in our country but is not very consumed in the domestic market," he said.

500 exhibiting companies, both Peruvians and from other countries, will participate in the fair. Some of the countries that have confirmed their presence are Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Spain, the United States, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Portugal, Taiwan, and Turkey.
