Prices slightly lower than in previous years

China: Fresh figs enter Xiamen market

The fig is a relatively recent arrival on the Xiamen market. The production season begins every year in July and lasts until November. Figs are usually only sold near production areas because they are difficult to keep fresh and difficult to transport. The Xiamen market sold small volumes of figs in previous years. The price used to be between 70 and 80 yuan [10.25-11.72 USD] per kg, but it dropped slightly this year. The reason for this development is an abundant harvest this year.

Figs on the Xiamen market

There are fig plantations in Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, Guangdong, Sichuan, and Fujian. The figs are air-freighted to the Xiamen market. Furthermore, every fig is individually packaged to prevent loss and product deterioration. This means that the retail price of figs on the Xiamen market is relatively high. In production areas the figs only cost around 10 yuan [1.46 USD] per kg.
